Department of Pathology
Overview
Pathology department of Cancer Hospital and Research Institute has been functioning since 1978. The correct diagnosis is paramount for management of the cancer, which depends on the precise accuracy of various pathological tests and competence of the pathologist. Well qualified and experienced pathologists are in charge of the pathology & laboratory for smooth running and guiding the competent technicians whenever required. The department is equipped with modern, sophisticated and automated instruments used for carrying out various investigations.
Pathology department is divided into different sections namely Histopathology (Surgical Pathology), Cytology, Haematology, Immunology and Immunohistochemistry, Biochemistry & Blood Collection.
Surgical Pathology
Histopathology is gold standard for final diagnosis for cancer. The department is equipped with high quality microtomes, automated tissue processor and many other modern equipment’s required for quick tissue processing.
Cytology
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) has a proven & important role in diagnosis of all types of lesions and growth. All necessary modern equipment’s are available for the process along with well trained technicians during working hours. Within 24 hours’ report is also generated for faster and better services towards treatment.
Clinical Biochemistry
Semi-automated & fully automated biochemistry analysing machine with five-part analysis and automated electrolyte analyser provide precise reports to establish a diagnosis. All routine biochemistry tests such as Liver Function Tests, Renal Function Tests, Blood Grouping etc. are being carried out alongside the Serum Electrolytes.
Haematology
All haematological investigations required in the management of the cancer like Bone Marrow Aspiration, Trephine Biopsy and Complete Blood Count (Hemograms) are performed by skilled hands and samples are carefully handled maintaining the sterility.
Tumour Markers
Cancerous tumours secrete certain chemicals, proteins, enzymes & hormones into the blood stream and their high levels in the blood indicate the presence of cancer in the body. The pathology provides the services such as- TSH, CA-125, CEA, AFP, CA-15-3, PSA, β-HCG, IgG, IgM, Antibodies and gynaecological profile- FSH & LH are also investigated.
Immunohistochemistry
Immunohistochemistry is basically a special procedure to identify certain antigens on the cell surface, nuclear membrane & cytoplasm of cells, including tumour cells. At our institute we are doing ER, PR & HER-2 on tissues from carcinoma breast patients. This enables us to plan treatments of patients in a better way.

Cryostat
During surgery while patient is still on the operating table, sometimes it is important for the surgeon to know clearance of the required margins and nature of primary tumour. In such a scenario it is important to have a pathologist’s opinion within 15 to 20 minutes. CRYOSTAT is the machine which enables us to give pathological report within a short span of 20 minutes. Frozen sections are created during this time and Tissue Block can be created with cytology material. They are analysed adequately to reach up to the conclusion faster.
Critical Value Alert
Critical/Panic values are defined as values that are outside the normal range to a degree that may constitute an immediate health risk to the individual or require immediate action on the part of the ordering physician.
Outsource facilities for advanced molecular and genetic testing. We have collaboration with nationally reputable labs namely Oncquest.
