Overview
In Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) play a critical role in providing specialized care for patients with severe or life-threatening conditions. 33 bedded well equipped with haemo dynamic monitors, ventilators, BIPAP support, pulse oximeter, central suction apparatus, central oxygen supply, ambu bags (emergency kits), crash cart, ABG machine, air mattress, O2 concentrator, IV infusion pump, glucometer, NIBP, bedside X ray and ECG machine, defibrillator, intubation trolley and CVP line are dedicated to these wards. A devoted team of doctors, nurses and staff is present round the clock for patient care. The functions of an ICU in a cancer hospital include:

- Management of Critical Illnesses: The ICU provides care for cancer patients who develop life-threatening complications, such as severe infections (e.g., sepsis), organ failure, or respiratory distress.
- Post-Operative Care: Patients undergoing major surgeries, such as tumour resections, may require intensive monitoring and care in the ICU post-operatively to ensure they recover without complications.
- Advanced Monitoring: The ICU is equipped with advanced monitoring systems to continuously track vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) and detect any signs of deterioration in a patient’s condition.
- Administration of Specialized Therapies: The ICU administers complex treatments like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy that may require close monitoring due to potential severe side effects. Critical care support such as mechanical ventilation, dialysis, and intravenous medications is also provided.
- Management of Oncological Emergencies: The ICU is equipped to handle emergencies unique to cancer patients, such as tumor lysis syndrome, spinal cord compression, or neutropenic sepsis.
- Supportive Care: Pain management, nutritional support, and psychological support are integral components of ICU care in cancer hospitals, aiming to improve the patient’s quality of life.
- End-of-Life Care: The ICU may also provide palliative care for patients with advanced cancer, focusing on symptom management and providing comfort during the end stages of life.
